Tempo Marks

What Are the Basic Tempo Markings? Italian musical terminology makes regular use of the following tempo markings: Larghissimo—very, very slow, almost droning (20 BPM and below) Grave—slow and solemn (20–40 BPM) Lento—slowly (40–60 BPM) Largo—the most commonly indicated “slow” tempo (40–60 BPM) Larghetto—rather broadly, and still quite slow (60–66 BPM) Adagio—another popular slow tempo, which translates to mean "at ease" (66–76 BPM) Adagietto—rather slow (70–80 BPM) Andante moderato—a bit slower than andante Andante—a popular tempo that translates as “at a walking pace” (76–108 BPM) Andantino—slightly faster than andante Moderato—moderately (108–120 BPM) Allegretto—moderately fast (but less so than allegro) Allegro moderato—moderately quick (112–124 BPM) Allegro—perhaps the most frequently used tempo marking (120–168 BPM, which includes the “heartbeat tempo” sweet spot) Vivace—lively and fast (typically around 168-176 BPM) Vivacissimo—very fast and lively, even faster than viv...

Volcanic Eruption: What to do before, during, and after

With the country on Alert Level 4 for “hazardous explosion” being possible in Taal within days, if not hours, Filipinos are starting to prepare for potential disaster. To help everyone stay safe, here’s a quick guide on what to do before, during, and after a volcanic eruption: BEFORE THE EXPLOSION Evacuate immediately if you live or are staying within the radius of affected areas. 1. Long before the explosion, affected areas would have been given a warning to evacuate the premises by local government units. 2. Stay tuned to national news and your local community’s channels to be on top of the situation and stay informed with local safety plans and evacuation areas. Whether it’s through local radio, TV news, or official social channels of news outlets, make sure that you’re getting reliable information from trusted sources and not potentially dangerous misinformation from hoax accounts. 3. Charge your electronics. Keep your mobile devices and power banks charged in case of power interru...

World Peace

What is World Peace? World peace, or peace on Earth, is the concept of an ideal state of happiness, freedom and peace within and among all people and nations on Planet Earth.  There are other 3 questions about World Peace: 1. Has the world ever been at peace?  Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history. ... The combined armed forces of the world have 21.3 million people. China has the world's largest, with 2.4 million. 2. Why is World Peace important? Peace builds, strengthens and restores Peace is the bold, courageous and ultimate response to the notion that violence provides any viable solution for the conflicts of our world. Where war destroys and tears apart, peace builds, strengthens and restores. 3. How can we bring peace to the world? Here are the 10 steps to World Peace:  1. Start by stamping out exclusion. 2. Bring about true equality between women and men. 3. Share out wealth fairly. 4. Tack...

Classical Elements: Overview & History

Originally written in October 21, 2020. Overview Classical elements typically refer to the concepts of earth, water, air, fire, and (later) aether, which were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances. Ancient cultures in Greece, Persia, Babylonia, Japan, Tibet, and India had all similar lists, sometimes referring in local languages to "air" as "wind" and the fifth element as "void". The Chinese Wu Xing system lists Wood (木 mù), Fire (火 huǒ), Earth (土 tǔ), Metal (金 jīn), and Water (水 shuǐ), though these are described more as energies or transitions rather than as types of material. These different cultures and even individual philosophers had widely varying explanations concerning their attributes and how they related to observable phenomena as well as cosmology. Sometimes these theories overlapped with mythology and were personified in deities. Some of these interpretations included atomism (the idea of ver...

When will the COVID-19 pandemic end?

In 1920, a world wearied by the First World War and sickened by the 1918 flu pandemic desperately sought to move past the struggles and tragedies and start to rebuild lives. People were in search of a “return to normalcy,” as Warren G. Harding put it. Today, nearly every country finds itself in a similar position. More than eight months and 900,000 deaths into the COVID-19 pandemic,1 people around the world are longing for an end. In our view, there are two important definitions of “end,” each with a separate timeline: 1. An epidemiological end point when herd immunity is achieved. One end point will occur when the proportion of society immune to COVID-19 is sufficient to prevent widespread, ongoing transmission. Many countries are hoping that a vaccine will do the bulk of the work needed to achieve herd immunity. When this end point is reached, the public-health-emergency interventions deployed in 2020 will no longer be needed. While regular revaccinations may be needed, perhaps simil...
